What are Pause Automation Steps?

Pause Automation Steps lets you temporarily turn individual automation steps on or off inside the Automation Builder. Disabled steps are skipped during execution, allowing you to test, debug, or iterate without losing your original setup.

Pause without breaking: Turn off individual steps to test variations or isolate issues.
Non-destructive: Your wiring stays intact—no need to remove or rebuild connections.
Clear visuals: Disabled steps are dimmed on the canvas and are skipped at run time.

Key Benefits of Pause Automation Steps

Pause Automation Steps gives you powerful control over your automations:

  • Faster testing: Disable a step, run the automation, and re-enable instantly.
  • Zero rebuilds: Your configurations stay intact; no need to re-map paths.
  • Clean execution: Enrollio automatically skips disabled steps so parents and families never get stuck.
  • Safer iteration: Test different approaches or A/B-test without affecting your live automations.

How to Enable or Disable a Step

Hover over any step in the Automation Builder to reveal an Enable/Disable switch. Click it to toggle the step off—it will grey out and show a "Disabled" label. Click again to restore normal color and execution.

Disabled steps are fully ignored when the automation runs.

Visual Indicators & Execution Behavior

Disabled steps:

  • Appear greyed out with a "Disabled" tag
  • Are skipped automatically—even if they're the only forward path
  • Don't stop downstream actions from running

Enabled steps: Execute exactly as configured after reactivation.

How It Works

  1. Toggle the switch: Hover over a step and click the pause icon.
  2. Visual confirmation: Disabled steps appear dimmed to signal they won't run.
  3. Execution: When your automation runs, Enrollio skips disabled steps automatically.
  4. Downstream logic: If a disabled step is part of the only path to later actions, the automation will skip it and continue executing any active steps that follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will parents get stuck at a disabled step?

No. Enrollio automatically skips disabled steps and continues down any active path.

Can I disable an entire branch?

Yes, toggle off each step in that branch. All disabled steps will be skipped until re-enabled.

Is this the same as the "Pause Automations on Certain Dates" feature?

No. Pause Automation Steps pauses individual steps inside a single automation, while Pause Automations on Certain Dates pauses entire published automations for specific date ranges.

Do disabled steps count toward execution limits?

No, because they're skipped, they don't consume executions.

Can I bulk-enable or disable steps?

Currently, toggling is done one step at a time. Bulk actions aren't supported yet.

Will logs show skipped steps?

Yes. Execution logs mark disabled steps as "Skipped," giving you clear visibility during testing.

Pro Tip: Use this feature to test different parent communication flows. Disable your SMS reminder step temporarily to see if email-only works better, then re-enable it without rebuilding anything.
