Understanding AND/OR Filters in Smart Lists

Smart Lists help you organize and filter your families based on specific criteria. Enrollio gives you three powerful ways to filter your contacts — using AND conditions, OR conditions, or combining both for more advanced filtering.

These filters let you create exactly the view you need to manage enrollments, follow up with tour requests, or segment families for targeted communication.

AND Condition

When you use AND filters, every condition must be true for a family to appear in your Smart List. This is perfect when you need families that meet multiple specific criteria.

Example: Find all prospective families who have both an email address AND a phone number AND are tagged "Tour Scheduled".

[SCREENSHOT: Smart List builder showing multiple AND conditions selected, with examples like "has email" AND "has phone" AND "tag is Tour Scheduled"]

All three conditions must be met for a family to show up in this list.

OR Condition

With OR filters, a family only needs to meet at least one condition to appear in your Smart List. This is useful when you want to cast a wider net.

Example: Find families who either have an email address OR have a phone number OR are tagged "Waitlist".

A family will appear if they meet any one of these conditions.

Combining AND and OR Conditions

For more sophisticated filtering, you can create groups of AND conditions and connect them with OR logic. This gives you maximum flexibility in how you segment your families.

Example: Find families who have both an email AND a phone number, OR families who just have a complete address on file.

Pro Tip: Start simple with basic AND or OR filters, then add complexity as needed. You can always refine your Smart List later.

Available Filter Operators

Depending on the field you're filtering, you'll see different operators to choose from:

  • IS — matches exactly
  • IS NOT — excludes exact matches
  • IS EMPTY — field has no value
  • IS NOT EMPTY — field has any value
  • CONTAINS — includes specific text
  • DOES NOT CONTAIN — excludes specific text

Note that not all operators are available for every field type yet — we're continually expanding filter capabilities.

Common Use Cases for Childcare Centers

Here are some practical Smart Lists you can create:

  • Tour follow-ups: Families tagged "Tour Completed" AND status is NOT "Enrolled"
  • Communication preferences: Families who prefer text OR prefer email
  • Incomplete applications: Families with enrollment opportunity AND application status IS EMPTY
  • Active waitlist: Families tagged "Waitlist" AND child age group is "Infant" OR "Toddler"
