What is Double Opt-In?
Double opt-in is a two-step process that confirms a parent truly wants to receive your emails or text messages. When a parent signs up through your enrollment page or website form, they receive a confirmation message asking them to verify their subscription by clicking a link or replying with a keyword.
This ensures you're only communicating with parents who genuinely want to hear from you — protecting your sender reputation and keeping your messages out of spam folders.
Why Use Double Opt-In for Your Childcare Center?
Double opt-in helps you maintain a clean, engaged contact list. Parents who confirm their subscription are more likely to open your emails about enrollment updates, tour reminders, and program information.
It also protects your center from spam complaints and keeps you compliant with email marketing regulations like CAN-SPAM and GDPR.
Setting Up Your Double Opt-In Flow
Step 1: Create Your Initial Signup Form
First, you need a form where parents can express interest in receiving communications from your center.
- Navigate to Sites in your Enrollio dashboard
- Choose the enrollment page or landing page where you want to add the form
- Add or edit a form element with fields for name, email, and phone number
- Make sure the form submission creates or updates a family record in your Enrollio database

Step 2: Build Your Confirmation Automation
Now you'll create an automation that sends the confirmation request immediately after someone submits your form.
- Go to Automations in your left navigation
- Click Create Automation
- Name it something clear like "Email Double Opt-In Confirmation"
- Set your trigger to Form Submitted and select the form you created in Step 1

Step 3: Add Your Confirmation Email
Add an email action that asks parents to confirm their subscription.
- Click the + button below your trigger and select Send Email
- Create a friendly confirmation email with a clear subject like "Please confirm your subscription to [Your Center Name]"
- In the email body, explain what they'll receive and include a confirmation link
- Use a button or link that points to a confirmation landing page (you'll create this next)

Step 4: Create Your Confirmation Landing Page
When parents click the confirmation link, they need a page that confirms their action and updates their status in your system.
- Go back to Sites and create a new page
- Add a simple thank-you message: "You're confirmed! You'll now receive updates from [Your Center Name]"
- Add a form to this page (it can be hidden or minimal) that captures the confirmation
- Set this form to add a tag like "Email Confirmed" or update a custom field to mark the parent as confirmed

Step 5: Update the Parent's Status
Create a second automation that runs when someone confirms.
- Create a new automation triggered by the confirmation form submission
- Add an action to apply a tag like "Email Confirmed" or "Opted In"
- Optionally, send a welcome email with helpful information about your programs and next steps
- Remove any "pending confirmation" tags if you're using them

Using Your Confirmed Parent List
Now that you have confirmed subscribers, make sure you're only sending marketing emails to parents with the "Email Confirmed" tag or status.
When creating email campaigns or automations:
- Add a filter to only include families with your confirmed tag
- This protects your sender reputation and ensures better engagement
- Your emails will reach parents who actually want to hear from you
Double Opt-In for Text Messages
You can follow a similar process for SMS communications, but keep these differences in mind:
- Your initial message should ask parents to reply with a keyword like "YES" or "CONFIRM"
- Create an automation triggered by the keyword reply
- Immediately send a confirmation message and update their status
- Always include opt-out instructions in every text message
Text message opt-in is especially important for compliance with TCPA regulations.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Parents aren't receiving confirmation emails: Check your email settings and sender domain setup. Make sure confirmation emails aren't being marked as spam.
Confirmation links aren't working: Verify that your confirmation landing page is published and the form is properly configured to trigger your confirmation automation.
Too many people dropping off: Simplify your confirmation process. Make sure your initial email is friendly, mobile-responsive, and has a clear call-to-action button.
