Removing Tags From Multiple Families

This article shows you how to remove tags from multiple families at once using the "Remove Tags" bulk action. Whether you're cleaning up outdated segments after enrollment season, restructuring your contact organization, or clearing old campaign tags, this feature helps you maintain accurate records quickly and efficiently.

What is Bulk Tag Removal

Removing tags in bulk allows you to clean up or reorganize family data quickly. This is especially helpful when you need to update how families are grouped, after tours or enrollment campaigns have ended, or when old tags are cluttering your system.

Rather than editing each family record individually, bulk removal ensures swift and consistent updates across your entire database.

Why Use Bulk Tag Removal

Bulk tag removal streamlines contact maintenance and ensures clean, accurate family segmentation. Here's why it's valuable:

  • Save time by removing tags from many families in one go
  • Eliminate outdated tags that impact automations (like "Tour Scheduled" after tours are completed)
  • Maintain organized records with a clean tagging structure
  • Reduce confusion by clearing unused or overlapping labels
  • Support accurate reporting by removing invalid groupings

How to Remove Tags From Multiple Families

This section walks you through removing tags from one or more family records directly from your contacts list.

Step 1: Navigate to Contacts

From the left-hand navigation menu in your dashboard, click on Contacts to access your family list.

Step 5: Choose Your Removal Method

You have two options for removing tags:

Option A: Remove All Tags
If you want to completely clear all tags from the selected families, check the Remove all tags box. This removes every tag associated with those families—no need to specify which ones.

This is ideal for cleanup tasks or when you want to start fresh with a new tagging structure for returning families.

⚠️ Use with caution: This clears every tag from the selected families in one go. Make sure this is what you want before proceeding.

Option B: Remove Specific Tags
Use the Tags dropdown to choose one or more specific tags you'd like to remove from the selected families. The list shows all existing tags, and you can scroll or search to find the right ones.

This is helpful when you want to remove only certain tags (like "Tour Scheduled") while keeping others intact (like "Infant Program").

Important: Don't select the "Remove all tags" checkbox if you only want to remove specific tags.

Step 6: Confirm the Action

Once you've selected your tags or tag removal preference, click the Remove Tags button to begin the process. A pop-up message confirms that the operation has started.

Step 7: Monitor Progress

After you submit the action, the system displays a confirmation. Click on Check Progress to track the real-time status of the bulk action.

For larger lists (like removing tags from 200+ families), this may take a few moments to complete.

Step 8: Review Results

The Bulk Actions dashboard logs all tag removal tasks. You'll see the operation name, time initiated, completion time, and a Show Stats link for detailed results including which families were updated successfully.

💡 Pro Tip: After major enrollment periods or events, schedule time to review and clean up your tags. This keeps your automations running smoothly and makes future family searches faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I remove multiple tags from families at once?

Yes. You can select as many tags as you like to remove in one bulk action. Just choose them from the dropdown in the Tags field.

Will removing tags delete any family data?

No, removing tags only updates how families are grouped or segmented. It does not delete any contact information, notes, enrollment history, or other family data.

Can I remove all tags from selected families in one action?

Yes, simply check the Remove all tags option in the action window to clear all tags from the selected records.

Can I undo a bulk tag removal?

Tag removals can't be undone directly through an "undo" button. However, you can reapply tags using the Add Tags bulk action if needed. This is why it's important to review your selection before confirming.

Where can I see which families had tags removed?

Go to the Bulk Actions tab and click Show Stats beside the relevant action to view the detailed list of families and success status for each record.

What happens to automations when I remove tags?

If you have automations that trigger based on tags (like sending a follow-up text when someone is tagged "Tour Completed"), removing those tags won't trigger the automation. The automation only activates when a tag is added, not when it's removed.

💡 Pro Tip: Before removing tags used in active automations, check your automation settings to make sure you're not disrupting any important family communication sequences.
