What is SMS Restriction History?

The SMS Restriction History dashboard gives you complete visibility into any warnings or temporary restrictions applied to your text messaging. When you send high volumes of texts to families—for enrollment reminders, tour confirmations, or updates—carriers monitor your sending behavior to protect their networks.

This dashboard helps you understand what happened, when it happened, and why, so you can quickly fix issues and keep your family communication running smoothly.

Common causes of restrictions

  • Hitting daily or weekly sending limits
  • High opt-out rate (families unsubscribing)
  • High delivery error rate (disconnected numbers, landlines, carrier filtering)
Example: If you send a mass text about enrollment deadlines and 6% of families opt out—above the 2–3% safe zone—your account may receive a temporary restriction. The log captures exactly when this happened so you can adjust your messaging strategy.

Where to Find the SMS Restriction Log

  1. Navigate to Client Account → Settings → Phone Numbers
  2. Click Advanced Settings in the top-right corner
  3. Select the Restriction History tab on the far right

You'll see filters on the right side to narrow by date range, plus pagination controls at the bottom if you have multiple restriction events.

Understanding the Restriction Log

Each row in the table shows:

  • Date — when the warning or restriction occurred
  • Restriction Type — Warning or Temporary Restriction
  • Restriction Reason — what triggered it (e.g., "Opt-out rate exceeded threshold")
  • Percentage / Count — the actual rate at the time (e.g., 6.2% opt-out rate)
  • Additional Details — related metrics like error rate

Threshold Guidance

Enrollio monitors two key metrics to keep your text messaging healthy:

Opt-Out Rate

  • Target: Stay below 2–3%
  • Good: 0–1%
  • Lockout: At 3%, your account is locked from sending texts for 24 hours

A high opt-out rate means families are unsubscribing, marking your messages as spam, or filing complaints. This usually indicates content that feels too frequent, irrelevant, or pushy.

Delivery Error Rate

  • Good: 0–6%
  • Lockout: At 10%, your account is locked from sending texts for 24 hours

A high error rate means you're texting disconnected numbers, landlines, or devices that can't receive texts. It can also mean carriers are blocking your messages due to past sending issues.

Important: After a lockout, review your recent messages, clean your contact lists, and check your compliance settings before resuming. Don't just wait 24 hours and send the same content again.

How to Improve Your Rates

Lower your opt-out rate

  • Send relevant, timely content (enrollment deadlines, tour reminders, policy updates)
  • Avoid over-messaging—batch updates instead of sending multiple texts per day
  • Always include your center name and reason for texting
  • Make it easy to opt out (carriers require this anyway)

Lower your error rate

  • Clean your contact lists regularly—remove old numbers
  • Identify and remove landlines during family onboarding
  • Verify phone numbers when families fill out enrollment forms
  • Avoid content patterns that trigger carrier filters (excessive links, all caps, spammy language)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Restriction History show real-time data?

Yes—events are recorded with timestamps as they happen. Use the date filters to explore specific time periods.

Will I see both warnings and temporary restrictions?

Yes. The log shows warnings (heads-up that you're approaching a threshold) and temporary restrictions (you've hit the threshold and messaging is paused), along with the reason and measured values.

What happens during a 24-hour lockout?

You can't send new text messages, but you can still receive texts from families. Use this time to review what triggered the restriction and clean up your contact lists.

Can I appeal a restriction?

Restrictions are based on carrier policies and measured data from your account. Focus on fixing the underlying issue—better list hygiene, more relevant content, or reduced sending volume—rather than appealing.
